General Functional Requirement of GMDSS


Let us get an insight on the General Functional requirements on the GMDSS Equipment on board the ships. 

The blogger of this article, with his experience of over two decades as a radio officer and also a GMDSS Radio surveyor for various classification societies in India - has in the recent past has come across various instances during surveys on board that the competence level of on board personnel was very minimal with respect to the above subject. In many a cases, the procedure to send a distress message by Satcom C - was also not known making the system a mockery. The purpose of this blog is not to insult or find fault with any person in particular, it is published out of pure interest and passion to the Industry

  1. Transmission of ship-to-shore distress alerts by at least two separate and independent means, using different radio communication service;
  2. Reception of shore-to-ship distress alerts;
  3. Transmission/reception of ship-to-ship distress alerts;
  4. Transmission/reception of search and rescue co-ordinating communications;
  5. Transmission/reception of on-scene communications;
  6. Transmission/reception of SART signals for locating;
  7. Transmission/reception of maritime safety information;
  8. Transmission/reception of general radiocommunications to and from shore-based radio systems or networks; and
  9. Transmission/reception of bridge-to-bridge communications.
